    Tu sais que ca me fait du bien de revoir celles de Lyon! Souvenirs lorsque je les ai prises….
    Et ce soir: Fete des lumières a Lyon! Je vais mettre des lumignons sur mes fenêtres 🙂

    The tradition dates back to 1852 when the bell tower at Fourvière was built and a statue of the Virgin Mary was placed on top. The inauguration of the statue was planned for the 8 September 1852 (yes, September), the feast of the Nativity of Mary. However, flooding prevented the statue from leaving the foundry workshop, located by the Saône, and a new date was chosen instead: 8 December, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. This time they did manage to put the statue place, but the official festivities had to be cancelled because of storms during the day. However, the skies cleared in the evening and the inhabitants of Lyon put little candles along their windowsills to mark the event. The illumination of the city has been repeated every 8 December since 1852, becoming a tradition.
    So, why do people talk about the plague?
    It comes from confusion between the inauguration and events in 1643, two centuries earlier. The plague was raging across Europe and the city’s aldermen (the equivalent of the municipal council today) vowed to climb Fourvière hill and make an offering of a golden coin or crown if the city was spared. Their prayers were answered and the city was spared, so every 8 September (yes September!) ever since, the vow has been renewed by the Mayor and the municipal council who climb Fourvière hill and give a piece of gold to the Archbishop of Lyon.
